FREE FALL

TITLE: FREE FALL
AUTHOR: ROBERT CRAIS
Date: 25/06/2008
Grade: 4.5
Details: no.4 Elvis Cole Mystery
Audio: 8 Cd's/ 7 hours, 59 minutes
Narrator: William Roberts
Library/Own

When Jennifer Sheridan walks into Elvis Cole's office wanting to hire him, he has several good reasons to say no. But he doesn't and finds himself checking out Jennifer's fiance, Mark, a LA cop with an elite undercover unit.
What at first appears to be a simple case of love gone sour, soon turns into something far darker and nastier. Soon, Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are running from a gang as well as the police.
Fast paced and full of action, this was easy to listen to, although at times Cole is a bit too smart for me.

SEPULCHRE

TITLE: SEPULCHRE
AUTHOR: KATE MOSSE
Pages: 544
Date: 25/06/2008
Grade: 4+
Own

Another novel by Mosse, set in two different times, with two stories that flow into each other.
In 1891, Leonie Vernier and her brother Anatole flee Paris for Domaine de la Cade, near Carcassonne, only to find that they can't flee their twisted and obsessed tormentor. And in the dark woods surrounding the isolated house, Leonie finds a Visigoth sepulchre and a deck of Tarot cards which both hold secrets and strange and dangerous powers.
In 2007, Meredith Martin comes in contact with the same deck of cards just before she visits Domaine de la Cade while trying to find out about her heritage. But it turns out that the way to her ancestors lies through Leonie and the mysteries she left, and that Meredith has her own battle with an obsessive opponent to face.
This book was nowhere near as good as LABYRINTH. I don't know why Debussy had to be part of the story, and couldn't help feeling that Mosse used magic and mysticism whenever she got stuck in a story line. I just couldn't follow the conclusions, especially Meredith, would come to which appeared to be based on nothing. It would also have helped if an explanation had been given for the obsession in the modern story.
Still, it was an interesting read, if not a page turner.

AN UNHALLOWED GRAVE

TITLE: AN UNHALLOWED GRAVE
AUTHOR: KATE ELLIS
Pages: 232
Date: 20/06/2008
Grade: 4.5
Details: no. 3 Wesley Peterson Mystery
Own

Wesley Peterson is investigating a string of burglaries when the body of Pauline Brent is found hanging from a Yew tree in a graveyard. Almost immediately suicide is ruled out and Wesley and his colleagues find themselves trying to figure out why anybody would want to harm this very private and well-liked woman.
Meanwhile, Neal Watson is starting on an archaeological dig near by, only to find the remains of a young woman, hanged over 500 years previously.
Soon the two investigations start to show remarkable similarities, with the question being whether or not that is pure coincidence.
As always, a good and well plotted mystery, even if, for once, I did have the solution before Wesley.

The board is a hotbed of rivalry and mistrust, and Carole is ready to resign her position when a skeleton with a hole in the head is discovered in the garden of the estate. This of course triggers her and Jude, her neighbours', investigative streak. And when the old remains are joined by a fresh murder, it is all systems go, although Jude has another issue to deal with and Carole finds herself facing her usual jealousy.
A good, old fashioned British mystery, well set up and easy to read.

LORD JOHN AND THE HAND OF DEVILS

TITLE: LORD JOHN AND THE HAND OF DEVILS
AUTHOR: DIANA GABALDON
Pages: 302
Date: 17/06/2008
Grade: 4.5
Details: third book in the Lord John series
Library

This book is a collection of two novella's and one short story.
In THE HELLFIRE CLUB Lord John Grey witnesses a murder and determined to right the wrong infiltrates a dubious secret society, the Hellfire Club.
THE SUCCUBUS takes place in Germany where Lord John is a liaison between the German and English armies. He finds that not only does he have to deal with the threat from the French and Austrian armies but also with a ghostly and murderous appearance upsetting the troops and keeping them awake at night.
Finally, in THE HAUNTED STORY Lord John finds himself under investigation about the canon that exploded while he was in charge. Feeling he might be used as a scapegoat he investigates the matter himself and is soon finding that both love and hate as well as rivalry between the various sections of the armed forces nearly lost him not only his life but also his reputation.
Although I'm not usually a fan of short stories, I did enjoy these and remain grateful that Gabaldon decided to expand on the character of Lord John.

Neither investigation appears to be making progress, but more people in Balaklava street die under suspicious circumstances.

This is a fun series with a very unusual investigator in Bryant and a wonderful relationship between him , May and the rest of the team, as well as lots of fascinating facts about London.

Layla, now working for Fox finds herself growing closer to him, a fact that scares her as much as she can't resist it. Both of them being able to see with their minds what's happening in the present, means that she knows more about him and he about her then is comfortable and it makes their intimacy deeper then anything either has known.

A real Roberts book, thrilling, sexy and exciting. A real pleasure to read.

THE SAVAGE GARDEN

TITLE: THE SAVAGE GARDEN
AUTHOR: MARK MILLS
Pages: 388
Date: 11/06/2008
Grade: 5
Library

Adam Strickland is a young scholar getting through college doing as little as he can get away with when he's offered the opportunity to travel to Tuscany to investigate the secrets hiding in a garden.
Shortly after arriving, Adam finds himself entranced by the Docci family, their house and the mysterious garden.
Before long he realises that in investigating the garden, he is really investigating two murders. Murders that took place 400 years apart but still have their hold over the garden and those who own it.
This was a wonderfully intriguing read, with the mystery not only being who committed the murders, but also who, or what is fuelling Adam's determination to solve them.

THE HOUSE AT MIDNIGHT

TITLE: THE HOUSE AT MIDNIGHT
AUTHOR: LUCIE WHITEHOUSE
Pages: 374
Date: 09/06/2008
Grade: 5
Library

Joanna and Lucas have been part of a group of friends since university. Now that they're all in their late twenties and working on careers, life still revolves around that friendship and spending time together. When Lucas' beloved uncle commits suicide , Lucas inherits his quite extensive wealth, part of which is a huge manor in Stoneborough. Soon the group are spending all their weekends in the manor. But the manor appears to be more then just a house, and it is soon having an influence on the dynamics in the group.
It starts when, after years of friendship, Lucas declares his love for Joanna, a development she at first delights in, but soon starts to doubt because Lucas appears to be changing, becoming obsessed with the house and his uncle's life and turning quite volatile.
As the year they spend visiting the house goes by, tension continues to rise, leading towards the shattering of truths, dreams and ultimately a violent ending.
This book strongly reminded me of THE SECRET HISTORY by Donna Tartt, but in this book that was not a bad thing, since it was original and tense enough to carry that comparison.
The only thing stopping this book from being graded a 5+ was the fact that it never convinced me of the House having a real influence on the proceedings. The house for me was only the stage on which the characters got to carry out their own destruction.

HOTEL LAS FLORES

TITLE: HOTEL LAS FLORES
AUTHOR: KATE McCABE
Pages: 385
Date: 08/06/2008
Grade: 4.5
Library

All the people in this book travelling from Ireland to Hotel Las Flores on Tenerife have a reason to leave their everyday life behind and escape their problems.
But of course, life is never that easy, and our characters soon discover that running away doesn't mean problems disappear. They stay the same, only in new surroundings.
However, being around new people can lead to a new perspective on things, and new opportunities for those who were tempted to just give up.
Like I said in an earlier review, this author is very much in the Meave Binchy school of writing, and isn't quite as good as the queen of Irish Novels. Her characters, especially in this, her first book, seem to lack a few dimensions. And the way people just changed their lives or got hooked up for life after knowing each other for only two weeks was a bit unbelievable. However, this was a very pleasant, fun and fast read, and I know I will continue to read McCabe's books, if only for the relaxation they bring.

PROCESSION OF THE DEAD

TITLE: PROCESSION OF THE DEAD
AUTHOR: D.B. SHAN
Pages: 312
Date: 07/06/2008
Grade: 4.5
Details: The City: Book One

Darren Shan has for a few years now been a favourite of Tara's. So when this title, his first book written for adults, became available, I had to read it in order to find out what all the fuss was about.
When Capac Raimi arrives in the City, he is determined to make it big as a gangster and only too happy to turn to his uncle Theo for assistance.
The City is being run by The Cardinal, who is in charge of everything, all powerful, ever present.
Soon Raimi finds himself taken under The Cardinal's wings. But as his star rises, Raimi runs into questions without answers. Why can't he remember his life before arriving in The City; why, when people disappear is nobody able to remember them, and what does The Cardinal have in mind for him.
A very dark story with no or few redeeming features for the main character. In the early stages of reading this book, I didn't expect to like it very much. Yet, I found it impossible to put down.
However, this is definitely an adult book. The library will have to re-think the Young-Adult category it placed this book in.

THE SHADOW OF THE WIND

TITLE: THE SHADOW OF THE WIND
AUTHOR: CARLOS RUIZ ZAFON
Pages: 403
Date: 06/06/2008
Grade: 5
Own

It's 1945 and in Barcelona a father takes his ten year old son Daniel to the 'Cemetery of Forgotten Books', a labyrinth library of obscure and forgotten titles. Allowed to pick out one book, Daniel chooses 'The Shadow of the Wind' by Julian Carax.
From this moment on, Daniel's life changes completely and before long the book and it's author become Daniel's quest and obsession.
Determined to find out more about Carax and his books, and why a faceless man wants to destroy all the author's work, Daniel sets out on a path that proves dangerous to him and those involved in his quest and/or Carax' life; a life that appears closely connected and very similar to Daniel's own.
This was a fascinating and gripping read, and highly original. The story flowed smoothly and I never once had my usual reservations as far as the translation from Spanish was concerned.

TWISTED

Petra Connor is working Hollywood Homicide without a partner, investigating a shooting outside a club which killed four youngsters. With no suspects, no motive and one unidentified victim, she doesn't appear to be getting anywhere.
Then Isaac, an intern doing research in her department, stumbles on a series of unsolved murders that only have the method of killing and the murder date in common. After initial scepticism, Petra has to admit that they are probably looking at a serial killer, and the killing date, June 28, is only a few weeks away.
I wasn't overly impressed with the story; the main characters indulged in a bit too much navel gazing for my liking, but it wasn't a bad mystery and easy enough to listen to. If I had read the book rather then listened to it I would probably have skimmed over the parts that now ended up irritating me.

When the Titanic sank, all sort of people were lost to the sea, and similarly, all sorts of people did make it onto the life boats and survived.
This is the story of some of the survivors.
There is the 18 year old, newly married, woman on her way home from her honeymoon because she's discovered that she's pregnant with her wealthy husband's baby. Hannah O'Brien is also pregnant, and she's on her way to America and a new future. Both of them face raising their babies without their fathers.
Major Richmond Hudson becomes obsessed with the Titanic and spiritualism. And a young Frenchman, uncertain about his ancestry, falls deeply in love with the young American widow.
For all of them and others on their life boat, the future will be very different from what they expected. But when they get together, one year after the disaster, their new lives have started and a new future is beckoning.

What gave this novel extra interest is the fact that Hannah O'Brien really was on the Titanic and really did survive. She is also an ancestor of the author.
